Join us Friday, April 19, 2019 and hike to Hidden Cove Waterfall in Jackson County
Over on the western reaches of the Shawnee National Forest, just north of Buttermilk Trail, is a beautiful little hike to Hidden Cove Waterfall. We’d love to take you on this short little hike, down the trail, through the creek and to the falls. Come see the beauty of this lovely part of the forest, trails are blooming with wild flowers and we could even find a few morel mushrooms. Come prepared for this moderate hike with sturdy shoes that might get wet when we cross the creek.
This is a proposed logging area we hope others get to know and learn about before the Forest Service comes to burn, spray and log. We are concerned about the spread of invasive plants, destruction of a healthy forest, and exacerbating the sedimentation in the creek. The stands of mature trees in this area are reaching 100 years old, with some non-native pines, lots of oaks, hickories, maple and beech. We expect this hike to take about 2 hours to complete, depending on how often we stop to explore the trees along the trail.
We will be meeting at the Murdale parking lot, in front of Neighborhood Cooperative in Carbondale at 2pm to caravan to the trailhead location, off Gum Ridge Road in Ava, IL (37.8087440, -89.5132049)
